The extreme minimalist is fascinated by the colors of flowers.

When talking about Toshiya Kobayashi, we could not ignore his black-and-white, which has been an indispensable feature of his work. In this exhibition INFINITY, however, there is neither black nor white, but just vigorous, valiant colors.

Born in Hokkaido in1959, the intensity of vast nature brought up his keen intellect. His monochrome work makes the viewer feel as if they were seeing the universe of silence.

Why, then, has he turned his eyes to and been pursuing "roses" for years? Hundreds of photos of roses are so sensual, filled with charm, loveliness, lust, and decadence, but Kobayashi does not leave them speaking. The images of flowers and vast nebulae are combined and assimilated with each other, being soaked in new colors given by the artist. The roses and the nebulae are resolved into one universe in the end.

On the other hand, the work "Rose and Ahead" shows his essentiality as a minimalist. His challenge to recapture color as "object" is not seen only in the works of roses. He also tries to listen to the voice of time in Japanese traditional colors. A bunch of white paper implies an unpainted canvas, expecting to be dyed with colors.

We hope you will enjoy his universe of infinity, matured with the dynamism of large color photos and the intense existence of minimal canvases.
