Richard
Artschwager
Born in Los Angeles in 1923. Spent his childhood both in Washington
and in New Mexico. Went to Europe during the World War Ⅱ. Makes sculptures
with the shape of furniture and depicts daily scenes of average family
by grisaille. Had an exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1965. Although
closely related to Pop Art and Minimalism, his works with mysterious uniqueness
and individuality do not fit either of the categories. Retrospective exhibition
at the Whitney Museum of Art in 1988.
Donald Baechler
Born in Connecticut in 1956. Lives in NY. Studied at Maryland
Institute College of Art from 1974, at Cooper Union in NY from 1977, where
he stayed only for a year. Got acquainted with Jef Koons. Moved to Frankfurt
and studied at Staatliche Hochschuke fur Bildende kunste. Solo exhibition
in Germany, USA, Italy, Holland and Japan. Baechler prefers to remain
as an outsider and is a good example of 'Another America'.
Ross Bleckner
Born in NY in 1949. Had a solo-exhibition of Optical Art* works
in 1981 but was mostly ignored by the critiques. Has a consistent interest
in the light that appeals to the senses, which is reflected in his recent
works but with different subjects. *Optical Art; visual art which became
popular in the late 1950s and throughout the 60s.
Francesco Clemente
Born in Naples in 1952. One of the '3C' Italian artists (Cucci,
Chia and Clemente). Got fame in the 80s as an artist of the New Painting.
His source of inspiration is such things as Gods and Evils of various
religions and Myths. However, these are not used merely as symbols but
are included in the images synthesizing the memories of social and private
experiences. His retrospective exhibition is currently being held at the
Guggenheim Museum in USA.
Carroll Dunham
Born in Connecticut in 1949. Lives in NY. Had a solo-exhibition at Artist's
Space (NY) in 1981. Had a solo-exhibition at Daniel Weinberg Gallery (Los
Angeles) and Baskerville & Watson Gallery (NY) in 1985. Her works are
the collection of MOMA in New York, Whitney Museum of Art, and Search Collection.
In 1991, had an exhibition with two other artists, Mike Kelly and Cindy
Sherman at Metro Pictures, New York. The use of unique organic form is
one of the characteristics of her two-dimensional works.
David Salle
Born in Oklahoma in 1952. Lives in NY. Had a solo-exhibition
at Mary Boone Gallery in 1981. Like Schnabel, he became popular as an
artist of New Expressionism. Solo-exhibition at Whitney Museum of Art
in 1985. Painted a mural at Nagahori, Osaka, in 1997, had a solo-exhibition
at ITOCHU Gallery in 1998. The touring exhibition which started at the
Stedelick Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam this year have had a good
reputation.
Julian Schnabel
Born in NY in 1951. Schnabel became well-known as the artists
of the New Painting. Schnabel creates images of 'power' that derives from
violence, death and myths on a canvas, where he pastes fragments of plates
and pottery. Took part in 'A New Spirit in Painting', 'Baroque 81' in
1982.
Frank Stella
Born in Massachusetts in 1935. Became famous with his 'Black
series', the works with minimal lines stretching along the canvas. Later
produced the series of 'shaped canvas' as opposed to the normal rectangular
ones. From the mid-70s, started to draw systematic lines like a French
curve and his relief works gradually turned more three-dimensional. Recently
produces 3D works on a canvas. |
