ITOCHU Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition of Soichiro Shimizu as its first special show to focus on emerging artists of today. Shimizu was born in Tokyo in 1966 and studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York after graduating from Keio University, Tokyo. He has been living and working in New York ever since. By scraping with hands and other tools, he brings the surfaces of his acrylic and oil paintings with rough, even expressionistic finishes. As if the results of meditation, the works imply spiritual depth and tense beauty which would go against the chaotic environments of the City. Shimizu is currently drawing public attentions in his home town by installing the 2.4mx4m painting on the wall of Sony Headquarter building in Tokyo in October 1998. In this exhibition, ITOCHU Gallery will introduce some 20 works including acrylic and oil on canvas/panel and tempera on paper as the very first solo exhibition to feature one of the most promising young artists of Japan.
