DAVID SALLE

The Itochu Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition, David Salle, as the special temporary exhibition for the fall of 1998. David Salle appeared on the art scene as the standard-bearer of New Painting in the 1980s. Since then, he has been respected for his leading role in the New York art scene. From the beginning of next year, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao will organize a retrospective exhibition, and his artwork will be able to be appreciated by many audiences around the world. Salle also directed a film, Search and Destroy, in 1995. This film was critically acclaimed and showed some of his talents besides painting.

Itochu Galley commissioned a mural painting from Salle, entitled Crystal River, in Japan's biggest underground shopping mall in Nagahori, Osaka. This was completed in the spring of 1997 and measures 20 meters wide, the biggest mural in Japan. In the fall of 1997, Itochu Gallery organized his exhibition, David Salle High and Low. A Series of Six Mixed-Media Prints. It is an honor to organize this exhibition featuring oil paintings created in the 90s including his most recent works.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to David Salle, his assistant: Mary Schwab, Gagosian Galley, and everyone involved in making this exhibition possible.
